Couple lynched by mob at Wabagai

IMPHAL, August 18: An angry mob today lynched a couple for their alleged involvement in the murder of four year old Maibam Miranda at Wabagai Tentha Thambal hillock under Kakching Police station on August 14.

The couple has been identified as Samjetsabam Suranjoy alias Itobi, 47 son of Budhi and his wife Amutombi, 40 of Yairok Pechi and presently staying at the quarter of SEEDS farm at Wabagai Tentha Thambal hillock.

Suranjoy is also identified as the chowkidar of the farm.

Police said Suranjoy was lynched by a mob at around 5:30pm in the evening at the river bank of Wabagai River Mamei some 5 kms away from the Wabagai Police station.

One hour later in the evening at 6:30pm, the angry mob assaulted Suranjoy’s wife at the Keirak Kangjeibung. She succumbed to her injuries on the way to the Kakching PHC, while being shifted from the Kangjeibung by the police for treatment.

The couple is survived by five sons, the eldest being 22 years old and the youngest only four years old, the police informed.

While their four sons have been picked up by the police and kept at the Kakching Police, the last son is in the custody of his uncle.

Sources also informed that just before he was lynched to death, Suranjoy on being interrogated by the mob confessed to raping the four year old and killing her later on.

According to the source, he had confessed to the angry mob that on August 12 he took the four year old child to his home and raped her.

He had also confessed that after raping the child, he killed her and placed her covered by straws in their cow-shed.

Later at night the same day, he along with his wife took the dead body to the hillock and placed it there, he had said.

Meanwhile, according to the police, Suranjoy was admitted at the Pari Imom Hospital Wabagai Lamkhai for a liver ailment on August 16 and was discharged only this morning. He had returned to home along with his wife after he was discharged at around 8:30am.

Both the dead bodies have been deposited at the JNIMS mortuary.

Meanwhile it may be mentioned that, the dead body of a four and three month old girl identified as as  Maibam Miranda alias Angangmacha, daughter of Jaykumar alias Enao of Wabagai Tentha Thambal village was found from Wabagai Tentha Thambal hillock which is located 7 kms north from Kakching police station on August 14.

She was found missing since August 12 and her disappearance was reported the same day at about 1.30 pm to the local police station.

She was found without any clothing and hanged to a tree at a seed farm located atop Thambal Hillock. Her eyes were apparently gouged out and several scars were witnessed on her forehead.

The body had signs of mutilation.

The JAC and family members had denied taking back the dead body of the young child and it has been lying at the JNIMS morgue since yesterday.
