`Immediate need of a badminton academy in state`

IMPHAL, August 16: “There is a need for the establishment of a badminton academy in the state”, said Manipur Badminton Association, vice president and Badminton Federation of India joint secretary H Gyaneshwor Singh during the opening of the 31st Inter district and 57th State Open Badminton Association today at the MBA indoor hall, DM College campus.

In his address, Gyaneshwor Singh said that with the establishment of an academy in the state, the state will be able to produce several top class shuttlers.

He also maintained that the Badminton Federation of India has already assured to bear all expenses and to send in top level coaches to the state, if the state will establish an academy.

However due to lack of a suitable location, the idea is at the moment being shelved.

Further continuing on Saina Nehwal’s bronze medal winning effort at the London Olympics, he said that her performance at the London Olympics shows that Indian shuttlers are ready for medals.

He added that if the state shuttlers also work hard, they could reach where Sania is at present.

The inaugural function was also attended by retd Addl Director, Health Services, Dr M Kunjabihari Singh as chief guest and MBA advisor S Birchandra Singh as guest of honour.

The inter district championship is participated by six men’s team,five women’s team and 5 veteran’s team, while there are four Junior boy’s teams and three Junior girl’s teams.

In the women’s team event played on the first day, the Manipur Police Sports Club defeated the Imphal West district team by 2-0.

In the single’s match RK merinda (MPSC) defeated K Deepa (I/W) by 21-2, 21-1 while in the 1st Doubles match RK Merinda/Ksh Khelpati Devi (MPSC) defeated I Oshin/Kh CHinglembi (I/W) by 21-2, 21-1.
