IMPHAL, Aug 2: In another development regarding the misuse of development funds, a group of RTI activist from Kontha Khabam under Imphal East urge the state government to make spot enqury and take legal actions against persons involved in misusing MGNREGS funds.

Speaking to a team of media persons at a press conference held at Press Club, Majorkhul, convenor of the RTI activists TI Meitei disclosed the RTI report of the MGNREGS funds of Kontha Khabam Zilla Parishad of the last three years.

According to the RTI report, during 2010-2012 a sum total of Rs 3.6 cr was sanctioned to Kontha Khabam Zilla Parishad, a share of 25%. However, only about 10% of the sanctioned amount has been utilised for developmental works, the covenor alleged.

Blaming the bureaucratic set up responsible for the misuse of funds, the convenor further asked the state to come up with a definite policy so that misuse of funds do not happen agains.

Citing the lack of development as an example he said, “Development will never happen in the locality if funds sanctioned for the purpose do not reach the targeted people. Only when funds reach the targeted area development will have a sense”.

Further, the covenor alleged that MGNREGS beneficiaries were denied MGNREGS Cards. Households who are availing the benifits were not issued Cards. All cards are in possession of the Zilla Parishad, he added.

Mention may be made here that, no body is allowed to possess any card of others. Anyone found possessing cards of others will be considered an offence punishable under Section 25 of the MGNREG Act.
