Mob violence continues, house set ablaze

IMPHAL, August 31: Accusing a man of being involved in the death of an alleged vehicle theft, an angry mob set ablaze the house of the man at Lilong Yangbi Leikai this afternoon at around 3:30pm. The man accused of being involved is identified as one Juma Khan, 34 son of (L) Manirgun.

An alleged vehicle thief Makakmayum Saltur Rehman, 23 son of Suleiman of Lilong Leihaokhong had gone missing since August 29.

His dead body was recovered from the Imphal River at Haoreibi Makha Leikai Konjin area this morning around 8am.

According to a source, Saltur Rehman had gone missing after he ran towards the river bank while trying to flee from Juma Khan and his friend on August 29 at around 11:30pm.

Saltur was alleged driving away a stolen Bajaj Pulsar which belongs to one of Juma’s friend. It was stolen when the vehicle was at Juma’s residence on August 28.

Enraged over the recovery of his dead body, family members and locals numbering around 400 stormed Juma’s residence and set it ablaze accusing his hand in the death.

The family members and locals formed a JAC in this regard during a public meeting at Lilong bazar and demanded arrest of all involved persons at the earliest. Local MLA and state Agri Minister Abdul Nasir and assured to book the culprits according to the law.
