Ops against illegals to continue: HM

IMPHAL, August 30: Terming Thursday’s action against illegal migrants in the state as a successful operation, state Home Minister Gaikhangam said that operations will continue for detection of foreigners in the state.

The Home Minister sidestepped questions on the timing of the operation in the backdrop of threats and attacks against NE students and professionals he said, the operations were carried out today early morning after receiving specific information on the presence of illegal migrants in general area of Hatta-Golapati and Lilong.

In the said operation, 24 Bangladeshi and 19 Myanmarese migrants were detected while about hundred migrants professing to be of Indian origin were examined by police. He said, they will be dealt with according to the law of the land.

Minister Gaikhangam said, while they claimed to be from either Bihar or West Bengal they could not produce valid documents to support the claims.

He further said, instructions have been given to main entry points for migrants at Mao Gate, Jiribam and Moreh to beef up security to check illegal migrants.

With regard to illegal migrants from Myanmar he said, all police stations have been put on alert for illegal migrants. He however lamented the lack of adequate police personnel in the police stations of the state.

When asked about filling up of more than 4000 vacancies in the police department he said, let the financial health of the state improve and it will automatically start the process of filling up vacancies.
