IMPHAL, August 17: The Socio Economic and Assistance Centre organized an awareness-cum tree plantation programme at the Vidya Mandir School, Porompat today.

The function was attended by All India Trade Union Congress of Manipur general secretary, L Sotinkumar.

50 saplings of the various varieties mostly fruit bearing trees such as Mangos, Gooseberries and Guavas were planted during the day in the campus of the school. The event was also attended by the children from Class IX and X of the school.

In his address as a resource person, Sotinkumar gave information and knowledge on the importance of plantation to the children of the school. He elaborated on the importance of planting trees especially now that the earth is going through adverse changes due to the depletion of forest areas and trees.

Elaborating further on the need for such awareness programmes he continued that such programmes explain the environmental issues to the uninitiated general public.

He further explained how reduction of forest cover in our own vicinity and felling of trees are directly related to the droughts and increase in temperature in our own state.

He also mentioned how trees help us humans directly and indirectly.

For example, how trees and plants provide us not only with oxygen but also how it cleans the environment by removing toxic gas that we humans exhumes everyday.

The raw materials we also get from tress, how important it is to us. He explained by citing the example of how Britain during the making of the Titanic, imported wood from Burma as they wanted the best wood to build the ship.

He also touched upon the topic of how industrialization have paved way to global warming resulting in the melting of glaciers and therefore, the rise in sea level, causing threat to coastal areas and such.

He expressed the need for self-awareness and how we can help save our earth with each person planting a plant each. The organization is planning to have school campaigns in nine schools by the end of this month and plans to open more eco parks in the state.
