IMPHAL, Aug 10: A new gate near Phaiton village about half a km away from Gularthol on the Jiribam-Imphal highway has kick up a controversy over the boundary of the Jiribam sub-divison and has infuriated the Jiribam people, according to sources.

This morning, Jiribam residents found a big gate with the words ‘Welcome to Imphal district: inaugurated by ADC Tamenglong’ near Phaiton village.

The huge welcome board was supported by four GI pipes on each side.

Smelling trouble in the air Jiribam police rushed to Phaiton village and enquired about the gate. The village is under the jurisdiction of Jiribam Police Station.

The police informed the village leaders that the permission of the Deputy Commissioner of Imphal East district is required for installation of such a gate on the highway, which they have not done.

The village elders of Phaiton agreed and they promised to dismantle the gate, according to police.

Tempers have cooled down with the assurance, but trouble may flare up again if the gate is not installed by tomorrow, sources said.
