Indian Council of Historical Research urged to include “histories” of Northeast India

New Delhi, 15 Sept 2012: Ms Binalakshmi Nepram, Founder of Manipur Women Gun Survivors Network had a meeting with Prof Basudev Chatterji, Chairman of Indian Council of Historical Research on 14 Sept 2012 in New Delhi  to discuss issues regarding inclusion of  varied histories of Northeast India in syllabus, text books of the country’s schools, colleges and universities. They discussed issues regarding proper searched and documentation of materials of historical importance of Northeast India. Prof Basudev Chatterji mentioned that there is need to document histories both archival as well as non archival materials such as church records, private letters of the 2nd World War period, oral histories, folktales, folk songs etc. He also expressed a keen interest to start up the work as soon as possible.

As a process of development of the discussion, a team of Indian Council of Historical Research that will consist of the Chairman himself; Member Secretary, Dr  Ishrat Alam and ICHR’s North Eastern Regional Centre (NERC) in charge Shri Uttam Bathari proposed to visit Manipur on 12 October 2012 to do an initial survey. They will be assisted by Manipur Women Gun Survivors Network’s team in this process.The team will be meeting renowned historians of Manipur as well as visiting people, places and institutions of historical value in the state.

  1. This is a remarkable development. The layers of Indian history are astonishing in themselves. It proves there is no need to manufacture history in our country.
