MOREH, October 9: An integral part of the Imphal Moreh highway and an important bridge for the several vehicles plying along the highway on a daily basis, the Lokchao Bridge (19 kms before reaching Moreh) is today in a deplorable and pitiful condition.

The iron bridge which was constructed by the Britishers with routine repairing by the state government had become an important bridge for the import and export business between Manipur and Myanmar.

Even though the bridge was repaired some years back by the state government, due to the huge traffic along the road the condition of the bridge has only deteriorated. Around 200 vehicles passed upon the bridge on a daily basis.

In case the government fails to look into the condition of the bridge at the earliest there is high possibility that the bridge will collapse completely.

In case the bridge collapses then there is no alternate road diversion along the route and as such connectivity could be completely cut off.

Considering all the conditions, the Meetei Council Moreh, general secretary N Inaocha has urged the state government to repair the bridge at the earliest.

Border Trade & Chambers of Commerce, Moreh public relation secy B Subramaniam has said that not only the trade relation between India and Myanmar but the connectivity between Moreh and other parts of the state could also be greatly harmed if the bridge is not repaired at the earliest.

He has further appealed to the government to look into the issue.
