Drug awareness programme held

IMPHAL, November 4: A one day community awareness programme on ‘prevention of drug abuse and illicit trafficking’ was today held at the office of Hodam Leirembi Club jointly organized by AMADA Mayai Loisang, Hodam Lairimbi Club and Yumjao Lairembi Meira Paibi Nupi Lup.  

Giving his keynote address, AMADA secretary, Sinam Meghachandra said that AMADA was formed in the year 2005 in an aim to fight against illegal drug trafficking and drug abuse and to further build up a drug free healthy society.        

He further said that under AMADA’s programme called ‘human resource development programme’ they have organised various awareness programmes in various localities, schools, colleges and other hill districts of the state.

Speaking as a resource person, Superintendent of Narcotic Control Bureau, Regional Unit, RK Ibungosana informed that NCB is engaged in checking illegal drugs being exported and imported in the state.

Advocate Ng Tejkumar, also speaking as a resource person, elaborated on the issue of drug abuse and domestic violence. He discussed on two major problems faced in the state. The first one is about those who kill themselves slowly by chewing tobacco, pan, smoking cigarette and the other one is the Injecting Drug User (IDU). 

These IDUs by sharing syringe with an HIV infected persons further spread the disease among their family and further to society as a whole, he said.

He further said that in the last few years he has come across a lot of cases of domestic violence due to the drugs abuse in the state.

“It is our duty to ensure safety of our younger generation by keeping them away from drug abuse, alcoholism and other problems or else after some 20 years from now our state will become a widows’ state,” he added.

The function was attended by Y Sundari Leima, vice president, AMADA Mayai Loisang, T Thawailamba, president, EKAL, Iboyaima, president, Hodam Lairembi Club and M Mangi, vice president, Hodam Lairembi Club as presidium members.
