Women vendors decry assault

IMPHAL, November 19: Women vendors of Bishnupur district numbering more than 100, who sell vegetables at Nagamapal Naga Nallah, have charged a councillor of IMC identified as Gandhi for misconduct and assaulting women vendors as well as dismantling their vegetable sheds yesterday morning at around 6:30 am.       

Speaking to media persons at Manipur Press Club today morning, a spokesperson of the women vendors said that since July of this year they have been selling vegetables at Naga Nallah opposite to the Manjuri fish centre. These women vendors from Bishnupur district sell their vegetables as wholesale only in the morning late by 6:30 am.       

Some individuals and even policemen collect rupees ten each from every women vendors for no reason, she said.   

But for the last some 20 days or more, they (women vendors) have stop paying money to those individuals, who collect money from them, as another group have also started collecting money from them, she said.  

On November 17, one individual who identified himself as Gandhi, a councillor of Imphal Municipal Council had asked them not to sell their vegetable in the area, she said.

As they did not bother to move on Gandha’s demand, not to sell the vegetables at the area, Gandhi came out and starting destroying their vegetable. In the tussle, some women vendors were left injured, she claimed.

Regarding the incident they have met their local MLA to take proper action against Gandhi, she added.   

The press conference was attended by more than 100 women vegetable wholesalers from Toubul, Kujuman and Kwaksephai of Bishnupur district.
