IMPHAL, December 15: A state police ASI posted with the CDO Bishnupur has been arrested regarding the kidnapping of three persons from Paona Bazar on December 11 and allegedly torturing and extorting a sum of Rs 90000 and a Nokia handset from the trio, said an Imphal West SP statement.
The Imphal West SP statement said, “Based on report of daily newspapers dated December 14 and own information regarding kidnapping of three persons namely Lalboi Mate, 38 of Khudengthahi village, Chandel, Thanglal Baite, 36 of Moreh Town Ward No 9 and Maopu Baite, 36 of Moreh Town Ward No 9, by some unidentified persons numbering about 10 suspected to be a combined team of Army and Manipur Police Commandos from Paona Bazaar, Imphal on December 11, and allegedly tortured/assaulted them while they were in their custody and extorted a sum of Rs. 90,000 only and one Nokia handset before releasing them in the morning of December 12 at Sangaiprou, a case was registered at the City Police station”.
“During the course of investigation, it has been revealed that two persons namely Thanglal Baite, 36 of Moreh Town Ward No 9 and Maopu Baite, 36 of Moreh Town Ward No 9 were picked-up by a unit of army, based at Ningthoukhong from Mantripukhri area on December 11 and taken to their camp”, the statement said.
During the operation, one ASI of CDO Bishnupur District namely Onkhomang Haokip accompanied the army team to pick-up Lalboi Mate from Jehovah Lodge located at Paona Bazar without informing his senior officers and OC/City-PS, the statement said.
“Before accompanying ASI Onkhomang Haokip, the army team contacted SI Md Imtiaz of CDO/IE using mobile no 7308259804 to join the operation”, he said.
“However, he turned down the request. ASI Onkhomang Haokip has been arrested in the case and one Nokia mobile phone which was taken from the victims was recovered from his possession”, the statement said.
The statement also said investigation is still on.
