IMPHAL, December 28: Irate local people stormed the house of an alleged rapist, damaging his house in the process. An Ex-Rifleman of MR is said to have allegedly raped a young married woman aged 18, yesterday night at Wangjing Hodamba Mamang under Thoubal Police station. The alleged rapist has been identified as Soibam Somorjit, 48, son of Nimai of Wangjing Hodamba Mamang Leikai. He is said to have voluntarily retired from service as an MR Rifleman.
The rapist allegedly went to the victim’s house at around 8.30 p.m. nearly 100 metres away from his own house and told her to open the door. The moment the woman opened the door, he gagged her and took her near the Wangjing river bank, nearly 20 feet away from the victim`s house and raped her. Later on the victim disclosed the incident to her relatives in the immediate neighborhood.
Registering their protest, local people pulled down the alleged rapist’s house around 7 a.m. All the furniture, clothes and articles were burnt on the road by the crowd. Thoubal police has registered a case and a medical examination of the woman was conducted at the forensic department, RIIMS. The rapist was arrested by Thoubal Police at arund 5.30 p.m.
