State Assembly adjourns after obituary reference

IMPHAL, December 19: The 3rd Session of the 10th Manipur Legislative Assembly began today by condoling the demise of former Prime Minister of India, Inder Kumar Gujral, former Manipur Chief Minister, W Nipamacha Singh, former state minister, Md Alauddin Khan, former MLAs, Md Abdul Waheed and L Kerani at the new Manipur Assembly complex at Chingmeirong.

The House also observed a two minute silence in respect to the departed souls.

The Speaker moved the obituary reference which was the single business of the first day of the two day long sitting of the Assembly session.

In his speech, Chief Minister Ibobi Singh who is also the leader of the House said former Prime Minister of India, IK Gujral was not only a political leader but was also a scholar, a poet and a leader of the whole nation.

He said IK Gujral was the second MP from Rajya Sabha (Upper House) of the Parliament to become the Prime Minister of the country.

The leader of House while speaking of former state Chief Minister, (L) Wahengbam Nipamacha Singh said that his demise is a great loss for the state and that the former CM was a straightforward man.

Describing further the former Chief Minister, O Ibobi Singh said that it was during the times of Nipamacha’s Chief Ministership that the state hosted the Vth National Games and the 5th Pay scale implemented and separate directorate of the MOBC created.

Speaking further the Chief Minister also condole the demise of former Keirao MLA and a former state cabinet Minister Md Allauddin and said he had taken an active role on the welfare and development of the minority communities.

The Chief Minister also condole the demise of former Kshetrigaon MLA Abdul Wahid and said he had championed the welfare of sportspersons from the minority communities.

While condoling the death of former MLA of Moirang and a former state cabinet Minister Laishram Kerani, the Chief Minister said the former Moirang MLA had followed socialist leaders of the state like Laishram Achou, Irengbam Tompok and Rishang Keishing and had been instrumental in building up the Socialist movement.

He had also gone on a hunger stike in demand of statehood for Manipur during his time, the Chief Minister added.

Today’s obituary reference was also joined by Opposition leader Dr I Ibohalbi, and from the ruling side by Dr Ng Bijoy Singh, TH Haokip, Agriculture Minister Md Nashir, PHE Minister I Hemochandra Singh, Tourism & Sports Parliamentary Secretary Md Amin Shah and MLA Thamarjit and O Lukhoi.

The House was later adjourned.
