ATSUM calls 24 hour general strike

IMPHAL, January 10: The All Tribal Students’ Union Manipur has announced that unless the state government act out its demands which were submitted on November 27 last by January 18, the student body will launch its agitations starting with a 24 hour general strike from the midnight of January 18.

Speaking to media persons during a press conference held at the ZSUM office today, ATSUM speaker Majabung Gangmei said in case the government failed to give a positive response to its demands even after the general strike, then the student body will called a press conference again on January 20 and announce its further course of action.

It may be mentioned that the student body’s November 27 memorandum to the state government had included effective governance of the hill areas of the state, a State Commission for the Scheduled Tribes, B Ed centres in the hill districts, solution to the INGTU crisis, provision of adequate staffs and infrastructures at the educational institutions in the hill areas of the state, reservation for SC and ST, protection of indigenous people’s right on lands and elections for arbitrary village authorities.
