Husband shot dead, wife injured

Manipur,IMPHAL, January 31: A man was shot dead by some unidentified persons while his wife was injured when they shot her at the Horizon village, 10 kilometres North- east of Yairipok police station at around 9.20 a.m. The deceased has been identified as Hopeson Jajo (49) son of Masatai Jajo of Horton village.

He had moved from Hongbai village under Kasom sub-division to Horton Village along with his wife and little sons and lived there for 4/5 years.

While Jajo and his wife , Maiying (33) were sitting on the veranda, two unidentified persons entered and then the duo fired three rounds of bullet at the couple. A bullet hitting Hopson’s chest passed through his back and a bullet scratched Maying’s  forehead. Both the husband and wife were taken to Yairipok PHSD but Hopson died on the way while Maying was discharged as her case was not critical.

According to police, the incident seemed to be related to a land dispute. However, the police are yet to ascertain further details on the circumstances leading to the case due to the bullet injury sustained by Maying. Yairipok police has registered a case regarding the incident. Further, 3 empty cases of 9mm pistol are said to have been recovered from the site of the incident .

The deceased has been handed over to the family following the post mortem. According to another source, the incident may be related to the murder of Ngochnmi (41) of Chonglom village under Kashom sub-division who was stabbed to death at a tea stall at New Checkon Maringlen under Porompat police station on 5 July, 2011. The stabbing incident resulted from the argument about NREGS.
