Women groups allege VIP involvement in drug trade

Manipur, IMPHAL, February 26: “The Chief Minister, Okram Ibobi is involved in the drugs consignment seizureĀ  recovered from Imphal Airport worth Rs 1.40 crore on January 11, 2013 by a team of Special Intelligence Unit, Imphal West led by Inspector K Ranjit,” allegedĀ  S Ramani, secretary, Nupi Samaj. She said this while addressing a press conference at the office of the National Identity Protection Committee (NIPCO), at Keisampat Junction today.

She further alleged that CM is trying to pin the blame to someoneĀ  else to edge away from the matter.

She pointed out that till now the issue about drugs recovered from Imphal Airport has not clarified by any concerned department and it has been ignored totally.

Calling attention to the recent recovery of drugs recovered by the state police force on February 24 worth Rs 15 crore at Pallel which were being carried by Ajay Chaudhary, AR Colonel, she alleged that the illegal business is done by the head of departments and police forces. After the drugs are seized by police, they do their own business which shows that those drugs has not been burnt down nor destroyed.

She further blame that it is the elite who are in power who have brought in the trand of drug use in the society.

Speaking at the press conference, Ph Shanti President of Apunba Manipur Kanba Ima Lup said the Minister or the concerned officers should bring out the culprits involved in the drugs issue.

A memorandum was submitted to the Governor of Manipur today by 14 civil society organizations: Apunba Manipur Kanba Ima Lup; Nupi Samaj; Tammi Chingmi; Macha Leima; National Identity Protection Committee; All Manipur Students Union; The Coalition against Drugs and Alcohol etc. demanding that SIU must be revived, punishment of the drug smugglers caught at Pallel and proper investigations by an independent body; to ban drugs and bring in a new law to prevent drug trade.
