UPPK cadres under judicial custody seeking bail

IMPHAL, February 5: After 45 cadres including four women cadres of the outlawed underground organization United People’s Party of Kangleipak (UPPK), who were hiding in various parts of Myanmar, were received by Manipur police commandos at Moreh from around 3 pm of February 3 till yesterday, now the process to release some 20 members of the party is said to have being started.
According to information received by IFP, there are around 20 cadres of the party including its secretary general Nithoujam Shanti alias Chinglemba Mangang presently lodged at Sajiwa Central Jail. However, no women cadre of the party is under judicial custody.
General secretary Shanti was said to have been arrested on June 13 last from near Nepal’s capital Kathmandu along with three other members of the party. However, according to the police, a team of Manipur police led by Sub-Divisional Police Officer arrested him from a railway station in Patna, Bihar on June 17 last and brought to Imphal on June 22 last.
The other three who were arrested along with him have been identified as finance secretary Langpoklakpam Inaocha alias Birjit of Konjeng Leikai, Major Elangbam Bobo alias Khangamba and Captain Jiten alias Selkhai of Karimganj, Assam.
They were brought to Imphal after receiving transit remand from the Railway Magistrate, Patna by the Manipur police team. Now they are under judicial custody in connection with several cases registered at various police stations of the state against them.
There are two cases registered against general secretary Ningthoujam Shanti alias Chinglemba Mangang by National Investigation Agency (NIA)’s Imphal and Guwahati offices. Besides these two cases, there are other 25 pending cases registered against him at various police station of the state.
However, out of his 25 cases, bail has been granted to him from 15 cases by the concerned courts and the other 10 cases are still in process.
Besides him, other cadres of the party who are presently lodged at Sajiwa Central Jail are also said to have approached their concerned courts pleading for their release on bail.
It may be mentioned here that the umbrella body of the banned underground organizations, CorCom (Co-ordinating Committe), which includes KCP, KYKL, PREPAK, PREPAK (PRO), RPF and UNLF had announced the dismissal of UPPK from CorCom on February 1 last.
