IMPHAL, March 7: Protest of women bodies and other organizations against drug trafficking which has gained momentum in the state after the arrest of several individuals including a PRO of the Army and the son of an MLA continued today with several bodies staging sit ins and burning effigies of state heads at different locations.
Volunteers of Khwairamband Keithel Apunba Imasing staged a sit in protest at the Ema Keithel.
Speaking to media persons, spokesperson Moirangthem (o) RK (n) Radhesana said the drug business in the state is controlled by sons and relatives of MLAs Ministers and high ranking officials. She demanded the government to produce the drug traffickers in the state before the general public at the earliest and punish them.
On the other hand, volunteers of Salai Apunba Nupi Lamjing Lup Sanuran; Modern Club and the Chingamakha Apunba Nupi Lamjing Lup jointly organized a sit in protest at Chingamakha community hall.
The protestors also burned effigies of the state Chief Minister and Deputy Chief Minister and the state DGP.
A protestor also demanded that the authorities should bring out the contraband drugs seized from the state in recent times and destroy it in front of the general public.
It may be mentioned that volunteers of several civil organizations had burned effigies of the Chief Minister and his deputy at two different places near the new Assembly complex yesterday creating some minor security scares on the first day of the 4th Session of the 10th Manipur Legislative Assembly yesterday.
Women volunteers of 14 civil organizations including Apunba Manipur Kanba Ima Lup; Nupi Samaj; Tammi Chingmi; Macha Leima; National Identity Protection Committee; All Manipur Students Union; The Coalition against Drugs and Alcohol etc stormed the Assembly gates yesterday evening and started sloganeering before burning effigies of Chief Minister, Dy CM and the DGP at Thangmeiband Watham Leirak which is a few meters away from the Assembly complex main gate.
The incidents occurred even as a heavy security blanket was placed in and around the new State Assembly complex.
Meanwhile in the morning yesterday, volunteers of the All Manipur Anti-Drug Association numbering around 50 attempted to storm the Assembly Complex. However, timely intervention of the police managed to drive off the rally participated by around 50 individuals.
The AMADA volunteers turned back upto Sangakpham and burnr effigies of the state Chief Minister and his deputy who is also the Home Minister, demanding resignation of the two state.
