KOHIMA, Mar 16 (NEPS): Nagaland Chief Minister Neiphiu Rio has showered state media personnel with heaped of praises saying that the press and media had been doing “commendable service” to the people.

The Chief Minister remarked this while presenting the Vote-on-Account on the floor of the Assembly Saturday. He said, “Good governance is possible only if the pillars of democracy are on strong footing. It is heartening to witness the positive growth and improvement of the Fourth Estate in the decade.” He further explained that a positive and constructive media was a “driving force” behind the delivery mechanisms of the other three organs of democracy.
Rio also strongly felt that the media must be allowed to function in an environment that “allows freedom of expression and free speech, without any hindrance.”

Congratulating the media for the positive role it had played in covering the recently held elections in the State and also for its elaborate coverage of all important events especially their assembly session, the Chief Minister, who has created history of becoming Chief Minister of the NPF-led DAN Ministry for the third consecutive term, called upon the media personnel to continue to play a “proactive role,” whereby they highlight not only governance deficits, but also their initiatives and welfare programs.
