Ukhrul bodies rally behind abused girl child

UKHRUL, April 17: The United NGO Committee Manipur (UNMM) has strongly opposed the State Government`s lack of concern and negligence against the alleged life attempt on a minor girl child even after several repeated calls for legal and  peaceful process and despite a protest rally on February 9 taken out by the civil society groups and the public of Ukhrul.

The dissatisfaction over the government`s inaction towards the voice of the people for justice was openly highlighted during a press conference held today at the Office Chamber of the Action in Women Development (AWID), the District Women Committee at Ukhrul Wino Bazar along with a team of the Ukhrul District Child Rights Committee Executive members.

According to the Press Communique` distributed before the press conference, the JAC against the Life Attempt to a Girl Child strongly condemned the grant of anticipatory bail to Edah Horam, wife of Antibas Horam of Kachai village peresently residing at the 7th Finance Colony, Ukhrul by the Sessions Court, Imphal East.

It may be mentioned that on February 3, 2013, Jim Horam and Edah Horam the son and wife of Antibas Horam had allegedly tortured and attempted to murder a 9 year old girl child who was kept as a domestic help in their house.

It said following a case registered with the Ukhrul PS, wanted tags were published in the media as both accused were still absconding.

The statement continued that Jim Hoeam was later arrested but Edah Horam continued to abscond. It also added, “It is learnt from reliable sources that Edah Horam has obtained an anticipatory bail from the  Sessions Court, Imphal East”.

Meanwhile, the statement also said that the JAC has tied up with several major agencies of the state working on similar lines to strengthen the movement and achieve ultimate justice in the case.

Apart from the UNMM Committee members from Ukhrul, members from Imphal headed by co-convener Sobita Mangsatabam also attended the press conference.

Speaking at the conference, Sobita expressed unhappiness over the slow progress of the legal procedures which has failed to protect the rights of the girl child and added that physical treatment of the girl and necessary financial assistance should be provided and necessary action be followed by the concerned Social Welfare Department till justice is brought for the traumatised girl child in question.

The Co-ordinator of the UNMM Poipu R questioned why the government has remained silent when anticipatory bail of the accused granted has expired and why it is not arrested her till now.

He also addedd that the Government should take actions and award justice as per the law of the land and in the meantime necessary aid and needs including mental and physical treatment and financial assistance should be provided to the victim immediately.
