Rs 95.76 lakhs worth contraband drugs seized; two arrested

IMPHAL, May 26: Thoubal district police nabbed two alleged drug traffickers and seized a huge consignment of illegal drugs from their possession today at Ubakthong turning, Thoubal today.

According to a press release of the Thoubal Superintendent of Police, the market value of the seized contraband drugs in the international market would be at least Rs 95.76 lakhs.

The statement said that on receiving reliable information about the movement of smugglers involved in ferrying/transporting illegal items in and around Lilong Loumanga, Dam area and Kaleikhong area with an intent to carry them  to various places of Manipur and Myanmar; a team of Thoubal District Police Commando under the supervision of Dr. Ak Jhalajit Singh, Superintendent of Police, Thoubal carried out frisking and checking at Ubakthong turning area on the vehicles coming from the Dam area towards Chingkham Makha in order to reach the National Highway 02 (Imphal-Moreh).

At around 12:10 pm, a Maruti Gypsy bearing regd no NL04C-1147 was stopped for checking, it said.

During frisking, the police team found two individuals in the Maruti Gypsy, it said.

“The two persons were verified when they identified themselves as Takhellambam Bokul Singh (51), son of (L) T Takhel Singh of Wangjing SK Leikai, the driver of the vehicle, and Md Tajuddin Saha (39), son of Md Ajimuddin of Hayel Labuk, Thoubal”, the statement said.

It continued that on checking the boxes found in the gypsy in the presence of the witnesses, the first box was found to be containing 16640 strips (166400 tablets) of “BIOCET” Pseudoephedrine tablets while the second box contained 7760 strips (77600 tablets) of “BIOCET” Pseudoephedrine Tablets.

The third box contained 7520 strips (75200 tablets) “BIOCET” Pseudoephedrine Tablets, it said.

Altogether, 31920 strips i.e. 319200 tablets of “BIOCET” Pseudoephedrine Tablets were found with the two individuals, the statement said.

Further according to the police statement, the market value of the seized contraband drugs in the international market is at least Rs 95.76 lakhs.

On verification of the two individuals, it was established that the illegal contraband drugs were taken from one Md Wahidur son of Md Abdus Salam of Lilong Atoukhong to be transported to Moreh, it said.

Both the individuals were arrested and the contraband drugs were seized today by observing formalities for further necessary legal action, the statement said.
