Cabinet holds discussion to extend ongoing assembly session

IMPHAL, June 29: The state cabinet has today held an in-depth discussion regarding the extension of the 5th session of the 10th Manipur Legislative Assembly which commenced from June 10 for some more days.

According to a reliable source, the state cabinet meeting presided over by Chief Minister Okram Ibobi Singh was held at his cabinet conference hall at 2 pm today.

A minute discussion was held and the agenda of the discussion was that the Manipur government would need to table some more important bills in the interest of the public by extending the ongoing session of the House which has had 15 sittings till yesterday for some more days.

Though the lengthy cabinet meeting which continued till around 6 pm discussed some separate agendas, the cabinet meeting put more stress on the government proposing more important bills during the Assembly session, informed the source.

The bills which the government needs to table during the session includes strengthening the present Narcotics and Psycho-strophic substances Act, 1985 (NDDPS Act), by adding some provisions to take strong action against illegal drugs and to control the various crimes and violence meted out against women and children.

A notification of holding of Business Advisory Committee (BAC) of Manipur Legislative Assembly was issued shortly after the state cabinet meeting, the source further said while adding that the BAC meeting will be held on July 1 at 10 am.

The forthcoming BAC meeting will decide whether the ongoing session will be extended or not. If the session of the House is to be extended, Chief Minister Okram Ibobi Singh who is also the leader of the House will table the business to be discussed in the session of the House on July 1.

It may be mentioned that the ongoing session was slated to conclude on July 1.
