JAC clarifies on police-local confrontation

IMPHAL, July 22: Locals of Mantripukhri have now formed a JAC today for `protection of the people of the area`, informed the chairman of the newly formed JAC.

Speaking to media persons at the Manipur Press Club today, chairman of the JAC, Aslam Khan said, the JAC appeals against the land acquisition for the construction of RBI inside the Muslim Colony and Thakur Bali area.

He further appealed to the state CM to shift the proposed site for the bank to another location.

The local MLA Y Irabot had also assured yesterday through a press statement that there are no plans for acquisition of land in the area, however, the locals were threatened when a large official team arrived at the locality this morning for land measurement, he said.

The arrival of the official team instigated the local public to come out in protest against the proposed measurement, he said while adding that the ensuing stand-off between the police and locals had resulted in untoward incidents including the burning of a police vehicle by the locals.

Claiming that 70 of the locals were picked up by the police during the violence, he appealed to the police to release them at the earliest and further added that many other local protestors were also injured during the police action.
