State girl to cycle around NE with message against VAW

JIRIBAM, July 9: A 17 year old girl from Lakhipur, Jiribam Sub-division will be cycling alone in the North East states carrying the message to stop violence against women in the coming month of August.      

Sougaijam Bidyalaxshmi Leima (17), will be cycling in over 82 districts of the seven North East states carrying the message.

Bidyalaxshmi made the declaration about her cycling campaign against the increasing crime and violence on women in the north east state and particularly Manipur, to media persons in Jiribam today.

“I am saddened by the increasing cases of crime and violence against women which has motivated me to go on the campaign,” she said adding that she would be embarking on a five month long trip.

Bidyalaxshmi`s cycle campaign will be flaged off from Imphal and will proceed towards Mizoram passing Guite Road then Tripura, Assam, Meghalaya, Arunachal Pradesh, Nagaland and back to Imphal again.

Bidyalaxshmi’s father S Iboton Singh, who was also present at the press meet appealed for support and suggestions in her daughter’s cause to stop crime and violence against women from the general public, NGOs and other organizations. Sougaijam Bidyalaxshmi Leima born to S Iboton Singh and Yangoisana Devi, of Lakhipur Ward No 9 is the fourth child of five siblings (a boy and 4 girls).

She is also a senior volunteer of the Nehru Yuva Kendra Sangathan, Ministry of Youth Affairs & Sports, Government of India.
