Thang-Ta association, FREINDS condoles Birjit Ngangombam`s demise

IMPHAL, August 31: The Huyen Lallong Manipur Thang-Ta Cultural Association, Irilbung has condoled the sad demise of noted theatre personality Birjit Ngangombam who passed away on August 29 after a prolonged illness.

In a statement, it said Birjit Ngangombam was a renowned theatre director who was also well acquainted in the field of Thang-Ta.

In recognition of his contribution, he was awarded Manipur State Kala Academy Award, it said. He was also an expert committee member of Ministry of Culture, Government of India, the statement said.

During his stint, he had worked efforlessly and contributed towards the field of drama and Thang-Ta and also took part in many initiatives taken up by Huyen Lallong Manipur Thang-Ta Cultural Association.

A two minute silence was also observed as a mark of respect to the departed soul, it added.

Meanwhile, Federation of Regional Indigenous Societies (FRIENDS) has also expressed grief and sorrow on the sudden demise of Birjit Ngangombam.

A statement issued by W Santa Meitei, secy publicity FRIENDS stated that Birjit Ngangombam was a dedicated theatre actor, Manipur Shumang Lila’s director and teacher of Thang-Ta who actively took part in many issues of the state.

He had played an important role in the production of a drama play titled “20th century”, produced by FRIENDS and took part in “Thounagi Meira Chukhatlasi”, a short film based on ILP, the statement said.
