IMPHAL, Oct 19: The All Zeliangrong Students Union (AZSU) has drawn the attention of Manipur Chief Minister O Ibobi Singh on the alleged rampant harassments meted out to the people in `Zeliangrong areas`.

The high-handedness of security forces particularly the army and para-military forces operating in `Zeliangrong areas` has gone beyond its limitation with detention of innocent persons on mere suspicion reasons without proper verification from the concern police station and harassment and physically torture after taking into custody which has exhibited that the army has taken the law into their own hands, alleged the union.

According to the apex Zeliangrong students` body, detaining any person in the army custody without handing over to the nearest police station within 24 hours and not giving arrest memo whenever any person is arrested or without informing their respective family members regarding any arrest, is a total violation of law.

“The illegal activities of the army and para-military should be reined and stopped at the earliest by the government or else the people will start widespread protest to register their objection to these kinds of disturbances caused by the security forces,” AZSU warned.

It then expresed that the peaceful atmosphere of the Zeliangrong areas had been transformed into a disturbed zone by the security forces` illegal activities. Picking up innocent persons and detaining  them in their custody without informing the police is an attempt for elimination, therefore, the AZSU strongly objects such detention,” the apex Zeliangrong student body stated.

The Zeliangrong people civil organizations on various occasions have highlighted to the Govt. regarding excessive activities of the security forces and for giving necessary and proper direction to stop such activities. However, there is continuity of such activities by the army and para-military.

“The immediate attention of the state Chief Minister who is the Unified Commander for all the security forces operating in Manipur is drawn,” the AZSU stated.
