IMPHAL, November 24: A public meeting was held today in connection with the death of Devjani hours after delivering a baby at RIMS on November 20, at Sagolband Tera Lukram Leirak Youth Club ground.

It was attended by representatives of several civil bodies including the JAC formed in connection with the death of K (O) Devjani and family members of the deceased.

Kanglei Ima Lup, Human Rights Watch, ACOAM Lup, Kanglei Chingtam Leima Lup, United Club NH-37, Co-ordinating Committee for NH-37 were among the NGOs present during the meet.

The gathering strongly voiced their objection to the constitution of an enquiry committee by RIMS authority without the knowledge of the JAC or family members of the deceased.

While quoting the comparison as mentioned by the RIMS on the death rate of delivery case in other states with that of RIMS, the NGOs also questioned the motive of the RIMS whether it was chasing the death rate.

Alleging that the ill fated incident occurred due to negligence from the part of the management team of RIMS, the meet urged the Director of the institute to take full responsibility for the death adding that it pledged to extend full support with the JAC until justice is delivered.

Mentioned may be made that the Regional Institute of Medical Sciences (RIMS), was marred by another controversial post partum death of a woman.

It may be mentioned that Keithelakpam Devjani Devi, 33, wife of K Netajit of Sagolband Tera Lukram Leirak died after giving birth to a child at the RIMS Gynae ward. The incident sparked controversy with the family members of Devjani alleging that negligence was the cause of her death.
