IMPHAL, November 29: Hospitals are considered as a safe haven by the people but RIMS has now became a killing field for distressed pregnant women, said Ramani Thokchom, president of All Manipur Social Reformation and Development Samaj at the sideline of the sit-in-protest at Keishampat Junction Ima Lairenbi Community Hall on the post partum death of Keithelakpam Devjani.

The demonstration was carried out by locals of Tera Loukrakpam Leikai and the women organization to condemn the death of Devjani at RIMS on November 20.

Ramani said their demand among others is initiation of punitive actions against the negligent doctors of RIMS including Dr Jitendra. People feel safe when they enter a hospital but doctors at RIMS have altered that view, she said while adding that many women have died while giving birth there. The awful death of Devjani could have been avoided had the doctors taken good care of her after delivery, she added and demanded befitting punishment for the doctors.

Devjani’s mother said during her nine months of pregnancy the doctors appeared to be interested in earning money and the most shocking part is that her consultant doctor Dr Jitendra was not present at the time of her labour.

The JAC on the death of Devjani will submit a memorandum through local MLA and Minister of Social Welfare Ak Mirabai to the Chief Minister O Ibobi. The memorandum will consist of a charter of demands including punishment of the doctors, nurses and staff involved, head of department of Gynae and Obs, RIMS and Director of RIMS. An enquiry should be conducted by an independent body and the report submitted within a short period, it said.
