Fasting teachers land in jail

IMPHAL, December 21: Three teachers who have been undergoing a fast unto death agitation demanding the promotion of more than 600 primary and undergraduate teachers to graduate posts were pulled up by a team of Imphal police from Moirang Leirak Machin Community Hall in the middle of their strike this afternoon.

They were produced before the chief judicial magistrate, Imphal west after they were charged under section 309 for attempt to suicide. The judge sentenced the three persons to 15-days judicial remand till January 4.

According to sources, the striking primary teachers took place at around 2 pm and an FIR was lodged at Imphal police station. They had been taken to Sajiwa Central Jail. The three teachers,  Namoijam Khogendro of Kha- Imphal Primary School, Md Basir of Sora Khonou Upper Primary School and Loitongbam Milanjit of Achanbigei Junior High School had launched their agitation on December 16.

It may be mentioned that the agitation was taken up under the sponsorship of the Demand Committee for the Promotion/ Upgradation of the Undergraduate/ Primary Teachers to Graduate Post.

The teachers were demanding the declaration of the results of the DPC conducted on November 18 for the promotion to graduate teachers and treatment of the result of the DPC for Matriculate and under matriculate teachers and the DPC for the promotion to graduate teachers as separate entities.
