IMPHAL, December 30: Tension erupted at Noney area after personnel of 10 AR in civvies assaulted three innocent civilians at Noney area this afternoon at around 1 pm. In this regard the women folk, civil organizations and village chief stormed the 10 AR post and blocked NH37 for some time.
Sources said that the victims who were assaulted by the 10 AR personnel were identified as Ngabung Rongmei (15) son of late Namdolung Kamei, Gaiphonglung (40) son of Namguigai and Kachangthaipou Gangmei (27) son of Namthuilung, all from Peace Land of Noney. The sources further added that they were civilians and the personnel had picked them up from their respective houses and started assaulting them physically. Later the civvies called uniformed armed personnel and took them away to their post.
After the information of the attack and arrest of the three persons, local civil organizations and womenfolk of the area stormed towards the 10 AR post and demanded the immediate and safe release of the civilians. Public tension mounted in the area. The angry public blocked the NH 37 for sometime as condemnation of the inhuman acts by the security force.
Bowing to public pressure, the three civilians were released after negotiation between public leaders and high ranking officer of 10 AR post at Noney. The public demanded that the 10 AR tender an apology to the public for the awful action, specially to the three innocent civilians and villagers of Noney.
Later, the villagers fined the AR personnel a sum of Rs 10,000 as per a traditional customary law of the area, said a source.
