Bid to blow railway tunnel, techie hurt

IMPHAL, January 17: An attack at the ongoing railway tunnel construction by suspected hill based militants left an engineer injured.

The incident occurred at around 6 pm yesterday, the spot is located at about 3 kilometers from Sibilong village and near the Barak River under Nungba police station of Tamenglong district.

Railway line construction is presently ongoing at tunnel number 6 and the work is executed by M/s Bhramaputra Company Ltd.

Reports mentioned that two lethod shells were fired at the tunnel construction site from a surrounding hilltop. One of the shells failed to explode, however another shell exploded near the entrance area of the tunnel.

Later, numerous rounds were also fired at the site from sophisticated weapons. The attack injured an engineer of the company identified as one Yadav. He sustained splinter injuries on his face.

On receiving information of the attack, Nungba police led by Inspector John Lamkang went to the location. Tamenglong SP Themthing Ngasangva also went to the spot with a combined security team this morning. A search operation was conducted at the site. Police recovered empty shells of M-16 rounds the area. The SP also took stock of the tunnels for providing security cover of the workers, sources said.

It may be mentioned that similar attacks had occurred previously at Tunnel 7 and Tunnel 8.
