Dingko sent to judicial remand

IMPHAL January 17:  Ace boxer Ngangom Dingko Singh who scripted history by clinching a gold medal in the 13 Asian games held at Bangkok in 1998 has been remanded under judicial custody for 15 days till January 31 by the Chief Judicial Magistrate Imphal West today.

He was produced before the CJM Imphal West under FIR number 20 (1)2014 Imphal Police Station regarding the assault of three girls, one of whom is presently undergoing treatment at the Shija Hospitals and Research Institute.

The ace boxer has been charged under Section 324, 354 and 23 JJ Act of the IPC.

The defence counsel representing Dingko Singh prayed for bail but was rejected by the judge.

His counsel during today’s court proceeding also submitted that the boxing coach who is a Padmashree awardee and an asset of the country has been falsely implicated without an iota of evidence.

Supporting the bail plea, the defence counsel also submitted that the accused is a married person with a family had will not abscond if the bail is granted.

On the other hand, the Additional Public Prosecutor based on the police proceeding submitted the statements of eye witness of the incident which have already been examined under the section 161 CrPC and further pointed out that the said victim is presently undergoing treatment for the injuries inflicted by Dingko Singh on the night of January 13.

After hearing both the defence and the prosecutor, Judge RK Memcha Devi, CJM Imphal West remanded the accused in judicial custody after denying the bail plea.

Dingko Singh was arrested yesterday.
