IMPHAL, January 21:  Deputy chief minister Gaikhangam has deplored the frequent cases of kidnapping people for ransom asserting that it will affect the peace and harmony of the state.

Gaikhangam was speaking at the 43rd Statehood Day observation which was held at Old Secretariat Southern Block today.

He recalled that on this day, the then Prime Minister of India, Indira Gandhi announced the recognition of Manipur as a full-fledged union territory. He further added that in such memorable day we need to make a fresh promise for development and progress of the state.

The culture of abduction of innocent people for ransom by the UGs or their over-ground workers or individual is continuing, particularly by people from the hills, which is very unfortunate, he said.

Such trends may be detrimental to peace and harmony between the hills and valley people. It poses a threat to the atmosphere of co-existence and harmony among the various communities. He further mentioned that the cases were observed mostly during the eve of Christmas festival and it is a shame for Christians.

Such trend may cause conflict among the hills and valley people. Such small incident might flare-up tension among ethnic communities. He appealed to the church leaders and civil society organisations etc to lead the young people away from such crimes.

Gaikhangam made an appeal for release of innocent people for the sake of the state.

He also mentioned about the low presence of government officials at state functions. He asked the reasons for them not turning up to celebrate the proud moment of the state as it completes 43 years of statehood.

In every important occasion or observation state government declared a holiday so that the people and other important officers of state may participate in the state function. But it is very unfortunate that lesser participation have been observed.

In the presidential speech Govindas Konthoujam said that after gaining statehood the financial flow to the state in many field including health, education etc have increased and the state has witnessed lots of changes.

He added in the race of development we need to work hard and think progressively for economical sustainability and more income generation.

He added that we must be prepared for participation in the development race with other states of India and work with determination not to lag behind.

State chief secretary, DGP, and other heads of department were also present at the function.
