`Good governance still a distant dream`

IMPHAL, January 21: The Manipur Political Science Association in collaboration with the Centre for Manipur Studies, Manipur University and NG College, Imphal organized a one day panel discussion on “Good Governance, Conflict Transformation and Peace- building in Manipur” at the Manipur Press Club today.

Addressing the function, Manipur Political Science Association, president Dr H Indrakumar Singh said although development has been visible in the country, good governance continue is still a distant dream at the centre and the state.

The state continues to face several conflicts both armed and civil, he said before adding that the civil societies of the state have a large role to play in bringing about a change and to end the conflicts.

There is no peace-building in the state, he said before observing that the state will rise only when peace-building is possible.

Although the presence of CSOs in the state is quite visible, there is no peace-building and good governance, he continued.

Ever since, Manipur merged into the Indian union on October 15, 1949, there is still no good governance in the state, and the possibility of seeing good governance in the state in the near future is bleak, said N Joykumar Singh, director, Centre for Manipur Studies, Manipur University.

Today the political class of the state is full of contractors, and it is very much unlikely that this people after becoming the peoples’ representatives will bring good governance in the state.

Another scenario witnessed in the state today is people taking money from the candidates, he said before adding that people need to understand the need of a good representative.
