IEDs jolt ahead of R-Day

CCPUR, January 24: The security preparedness in Churachandpur for the Republic Day celebration almost received a big jolt after the detection of two road-side IEDs today that were planted  in Kangvai area in the town and Oksongbung , near  Moirang, in Bisnupur district along the busy Tiddim Road. The bombs were later defused.

On the spot study revealed that the bombs, made of TNT, are believed to be weighing around 4 to 5 kg  each. Highly placed sources claimed that the impact will be devastating if it had not been cleared.

Sources said, the Army 107 Engineering Company later defused and detonated the bombs at a nearby paddy field at Kangvai. Locals said the force of the blast was felt at a circumstance of 50 meters away and applauded the army team, Bidhi Kadhani, that carried out the risky job.

The bombs were detected by a Road Opening Party(ROP) team of the army  at around 6:30 am at Oksongbung village along Tiddim road   which was  defused at around 11:30 am. The device at Kangvai which was recovered from near a culvert  was detonated at around 12:30 noon.

The army present at the spot refused to comment. However, the OC of CCpur Police Station Elvis Tunglut, who was also present there, stated that collateral damages would have been high had the devices remained undetected. The CCpur PS has filed an FIR in connection with the cases.

Till the filing of this report, no group has claimed responsibility for the planned attack.
