MUSU supporters intensify agitation

IMPHAL, January 23: The demand for revival of the Manipur University Students Union took a violent turn as agitating student’s burnt effigies, tussled with security personnel and caused damages to infrastructure of MU administrative block today.

Thouchom Suresh, Convenor of Manipur University Revival Demands Committee (MUSU- RDC) said that since December 21, there has been no positive response from the concerned authorities on their demands. The agitators had demanded that the practical exams, workshops, symposiums should be halted immediately inside the campus. They also burnt the effigies of the vice- chancellor, Union Minister of Human Resources Development and state Governor at the circular traffic point.

Afterwards, they went to A-Block and to the Court Hall building for a meeting with the vice-chancellor. After waiting for 10 minutes, the VC came out and spoke to the students. They also made a point that the VC cannot attend programs scheduled in the campus.

VC, Nandakumar Sharma said that the Governor had mentioned that in MU there should be an elected body as all the university had their elected bodies. He said that the governor also want to meet some of the students. He said that approval is needed from the Union Minister of Human Resources Development and the demands of the students will be sent to the President of India for due approval. After that it will be declared in the university, so the students will have to wait for a notification from the President.

This was not accepted by the students and they went on a rampage; the agitators destroyed properties of Manipur University A-Block. The main collapsible gate was damaged by the students.
