Regional leaders to press President on local issues

IMPHAL, January 20: Leaders of the newly formed North East Regional Parties Front will be meeting the President of India tomorrow to highlight certain demands including Inner Line Permit implementation in all the North East states.

The front was formed on October 20, 2013 by several regional political parties including the Manipur Peoples Party (MPP), Naga People`s Front (NPF), Asom Gana Parishad (AGP), Meghalaya United Democratic Party (MUDP), United People’s Party of Assam (PPA) and Mizo National Front (MNF).

Addressing media persons today, MPP spokesperson, N Sovakiran said a delegate of the front led by himself, former chief minister Assam Prafulo Kumar Mahanta, Nagaland chief minister Neiphiu Rio, former Meghalaya chief minister Donkupar Roy will be meeting the President at the national capital tomorrow.

An appointment with the Prime Minister has also been sought which is yet to be granted owing to his tight schedule, Sovakiran said.

Other demands to be highlighted before the President include 80 percent job reservation for the indigenous population in both the public and private sectors, and to extend the four-lane West-East corridor highway from Gujarat to Silchar upto Manipur, he said.

The team will also be urging the President to repeal AFSPA from the state, he continued.

Meanwhile, alleging the stat government of misgovernance, he said the Transporters and Drivers Council has been obligated to take the initiative of repairing work along the deplorable Barak Bridge approach road, due to the failure of the government to do the needful in the past three decades.

Heikrujam Nabashyam, who is also the co-ordinator of the North East Regional Parties Front further questioned why the Opposition parties in the state continue to remain silence even though the government has failed to function properly.

Speaking further, he said that the state continues to face several problems, which is quite shameful.
