Torch rally against Dingku in Moreh

IMPHAL, January 16: The alleged assault of the three young weightlifters on the night of January 13 inside the Khuman Lampak sports complex has created a furore in the state with several bodies not only condemning the act but also demanding action against the boxer.

Ngangom Dingku Singh rose to fame in 1998 after winning the Asian Games Boxing Gold medal at Bangkok. He received the Arjuna Award in 1998 and the Padmashree in 2013.

Condemning the action, civil organisations of Moreh held a meeting at the Meitei Council Moreh and took out a protest rally later in the evening.

The meeting further demanded that Dingku Singh should come to the all community leaders of Moreh by 2 pm of January 18.

The meeting held at 3.30 pm today was attended by MCM president, M Thoiba; Hill Tribal Council, vice president, Ginsei Lungdhim; Tamil Sangam president V Shekhar; All Community Development Organisation president, I Ibobi; Manipuri Muslim Council Moreh president Md Salim Khan.

Several other woman based organisations like the Kha-nongpok Apunba Nupi Lup, Moreh; Nupi Khunai Chaokhat Lamjing Lup, Moreh; Kuki Women Union & Human Rights Moreh; Minority Women Development, Moreh and the Muslim Women Development Association, Moreh also attended the meeting.

The members of the women bodies while condemning the act have also echoed that women organisations of the state should not let Dingku Singh escape from punishment.

They said that Dingku Singh should come to the all communities leaders by 2 pm of January 18, or else the organisations will launch several forms of agitations in the state.

Meanwhile, later in the evening, around 3000 individuals both men and women took out a massive torch rally against the alleged assault at the border town.

The rally was attended by people from all communities including, Kukis, Meiteis, Meitei Pangal, Tamils, Nepalis, others.

Meanwhile, the Women Action for Development has also condemned the act and submitted a memorandum to the Union minister Youth Affairs and Sports demanding action against boxer Dingku.

The WAD memorandum said that on January 13 at around 7.30 pm Ng Dingku physically assaulted three minor girls identified as Soibam Aranbala, 17 daughter of (L) S Rohen of Moreh Ward No. 6; Chunkang Pamei, 17 from Tamenglong district and Pungyang Yaiphabi (17) from Ukhrul district at the Khuman Lampak Sports Complex.

The Chanura Lamchinglel Kangleipak has also condemned the incident.
