AR commemorates Major Khathing on birth anniversary


<![CDATA[IMPHAL, February 18: Commemorating the birth anniversary of Late Major Bob Khathing, the 41 Assam Rifles today kicked off a week-long celebrations comprising of colourful events like sports, entertainment and educational seminars, in Ukhrul.

Marking the first day of the celebration, a football tournament was opened today at the Somsai Garrison Football Ground.

An official statement of the organisers, said that programme which is held under the aegis of IGAR(S) is an initiative to promote talent in sports and music- the two core interest of the youth of Ukhrul.

It said the opening ceremony was attended by most of the prominent personalities of Ukhrul district, Presidents of all the Social Organisations and all ranks of HQ 10 Sector Assam Rifles.

Colonel M Ravi Rao, Additional DIGAR 10 Sector Assam Rifles was the Chief Guest on the occasion.

A total of 8 men’s football teams and 4 women’s volleyball teams took part in the oath taking ceremony to foster the spirit of brotherhood and sportsmanship followed by release of pigeons as a mark of peace and tranquility and finally the event was declared open with the kicking of the ball by the chief guest, further continued the statement.

The first match of the tournament was played between United Ukhrul Football Club and Yarkhok United Football Club.

If further mentioned that a medical & gynecologist camp, a ‘Know-Your-Assam Rifles’ stall which informed the youngsters about the pre-recruitment rallies, a handicraft stall, a stall of black clay pottery and also a counter of SBI, Ukhrul to inform the people about the various schemes available in the bank were the attractions of the opening ceremony.

The week long celebrations will include Men’s Football Tournament (18 Feb to 25 Feb), Women’s Volleyball Tournament (19 Feb to 24 Feb), Seminar on Lessons Learnt from Life of Maj Bob Khathing for Social and Economical Development of Ukhrul (21 Feb), Rock Concert Cum Talent Hunt (22 Feb), Run for Fun for School Children (23 Feb) etc.
