Assam Police nab killer; transporters call off strike

IMPHAL, February 13: The last rites of Romesh Limbu (19), the handy man killed in Sibsagar, was performed on Thursday by offering floral tributes to his departed soil at the Inter State Bus Terminal gate by CAF and PD Minister M Okendro, and  members of the All Manipur Petroleum Tankers & Drivers Union and the All Manipur Petroleum Transporters Union.

PD Minister Okendro while condemning the handyman’s brutal murder as inhuman stated that people like the deceased are struggling by living from hand to mouth by plying tankers without considering the dangers involved.

Offering some financial help of Rs Fifty thousand each to the family of the two victims from his own pocket, he expressed sorrow and said that he understand the pain of the familys in losing their loved ones.

Further appealing to the union to revoke their stand of a steering down protest, he said that it was no longer necessary as the culprit involved in killed the duo has been arrested by the Sibsagar police.

Transporters Union president Bhupenchandra Ghosh said that as the Minister has kept the words of the transporters and the culprit has also been arrested by the Sibsagar police, the agitation of the transporters will be revoked just after the body of the departed handyman Ramesh’ funeral              

The body of the deceased reached Imphal around 1.25 p.m. which was brought from Sibsagar on Wednesday. The dead body of driver Sanjoy Thapa of Nagaland has already reached his home.

PD Minister Okendro said that such incident is not happening for the first time and even though the incident took place in Assam, the government condemns such barbaric acts. The Assam government after investigating the incident has arrested the culprit.

Meanwhile, the minister also informed that under the initiative of Chief Minister Okram Ibobi, the government has directed for road side protection in the NH-2 by deploying state Commando patrolling teams from Mao to Senapati after a request from various sections of the public, further mentioning that the state will take up various preventive measurements to decrease the threats on state transporters in the future.
