IMPHAL, February 7 (NNN): Manipur legislator Th Shayamkumar escaped a gun attack by unidentified assailants in Koirengei area here on Friday night.

Shyamkumar was on his way with his security escort to attend a wedding ceremony at Awang Leikinthabi in Imphal West when he was attacked by gunmen at Koirengei along Imphal-Dimapur road about 7 pm. However, the Trinamool legislator escaped the assassination bid.

One black Chevrolet car following him in the back swiftly pressed the brake and stopped in front of his car and then one gunman alighted from the car fired three rounds which failed to hit him, Shyamkumar told a press conference at his quarter here. He said the assailants fled after the attack.

The MLA said he along with his convoy chased the attackers on the car towards Pheidinga, but they got through the main gate of Leimakhong Army post. He said the Army personnel who were on sentry duty prevented his car from entering the gate, saying they need to take permission from the Commanding Officer to allow him to trespass, Shyamkumar said. When he enquired about the Chevrolet car, the Army personnel simply said they were locals of the area, he added. No group has said it had attacked the MLA.
