24-hour general strike from April 1 midnight: JAC

IMPHAL, March 30: The joint action committee (JAC) formed against the brutal killing of L Monika of Thoubal Achouba Bamon Leirak has imposed a 24-hour state wide general strike from midnight of April 1.

The announcement was made in a press conference held at Manipur press club this evening in presence of various civil society organisation of the state.

Moirangthem Devdas, the JAC convenor told media that the decision of imposing the strike was taken in a meeting at Manipur Press club attended by various civil society representatives. The meeting deliberated on the indifferent attitude of the government who have failed to give any positive response to a memorandum submitted to the Chief Minister on March 26 he said.

The JAC in the memorandum put up charter of demands including handing over the case to the CBI and award befitting punishment to the accused, setting a deadline to meet the demand within five days.

Further speaking during the conference, Ak Memcha President KAWWA appealed the public to support the general strike to mount pressure on the government so as to take serious initiative reduce the increasing rate of crime against women and children.

Strongly disapproving the suicide theory, Ak Memcha, also deplore on the silence maintained by the Monika’s in laws.

It may be mentioned that Moirangthem (o) Leimapokpam Ningol Monika, 18, wife of M Bikramjit of Thoubal Achoubal Bamon leirak was found hanging inside the bathroom naked at around 11.30am on 18 March. She was rushed to CHC Thoubal however doctors declared her brought death.
