Assembly passes two bills

IMPHAL, March 3: The state legislature has passed two different Bills proposed by the government on the sixth and last day of the seventh session of the Tenth Manipur Legislative Assembly.

The first Bill was proposed by Deputy Chief Minister Gaikhangam who holds the portfolio of Tribal Affairs and Hills also.  Dr L Ibohalbi of the AITC and NPF’s Samuel Risom made some observations for amending the bill called the Manipur State Commission for the Schedule Tribes Bill, 2014 on some points when it was presented to the House for discussion. The Bill was passed unanimously by the house after the Deputy CM amended the bill as per the observations made by the two opposition members.

The second bill was presented in the House by Education Minister M Okendro. Members of the legislature Samuel Risom, Dr Ng Bijoy, Dr L Ibohalbi and L Ibomch expressed their reservations about the bill known as the Rajiv Gandhi National University, Manipur Bill, 2014.

However, the House unanimously passed the bill after the education minister M Okendra and CM Okram Ibobi gave satisfactory explanations.

“The government will have to acquire some 25-30 acres of land needed for setting up the university in Churachandpur as the Rajiv Gandhi National University is being set up there. The government will discuss about giving the land on lease to those people who would set up the University after acquiring it,” the CM who is also the leader of the House stated.
