CAF&PD observes World Consumer Rights Day

IMPHAL, March 15: The World consumer rights day was observed today at Maharaja Bodhachandra College, Imphal organised by the consumers Affairs, Food and Public Distribution (CAF&PD).

With M. Okendro, Minister of Consumer Affair and food and Public Distribution, who was supposed to attend the observation as the chief guest, failed to show up, the Commissioner of (CAF&PD) Y. Thamkishore Singh replaced the minister.

Meanwhile, Member of Manipur State consumers disputes Redressal commission, Ph. Surendra Singh as the function president and Director (CAF&PD) M. Yaiskul Meitei as guest of honour.

Sr. Advocate of Dr. Ch Narendra, Retd Principal of DM collage of science, G. tomba Sharma and Asstt. Controller of weights and measures, L Nripendra singh, attended as the resource persons.

G. Tomba Sharma contended that being surrounded by south Asian countries like Myanmar, China etc has a drawback. The main factor being that there are no proper regulations or monitoring cell, many products hazardous commodities without proper detail found its way into the state, he asserted.

Moreover, he pointed out that as per survey, 73% of the milk product in the alone country are found to be hazardous to health.

Given the fact, large scale awareness programme on consumer rights must be conducted.

Addresssing his Chief Guest speech, M. Yaiskul Meitei said that the roles of NGOs are very important. They should take the initiative of not only informing the people about their rights but also encourage the people for maximum participation in awareness programmes.

He informed that similar observation will be continued in the coming years but at a larger context in places like the Ima keithel with the aim of maximum participation from buyers and shopkeepers.
