Gun-wielding man tries to snatch motorbike, killed in shoot-out

IMPHAL, March 8: A man in his 50’s who tried to snatch a two wheeler brandishing a small arm was shot death in a subsequent fire-fight with security forces.

The incident occurred today around 1pm at Komlaching along the Yairipok Kasom Khullen road under Yairipok police in Senapati district.

According to reports culled from the spot, around 11.30, a masked unidentified youth brandishing a 9mm pistol tried to stop Mutum Nabakishore son of Ibobi Chandrakhong Mayai Leikai who was driving home in a Yamaha FZ from Yairipok bazar at the crossroad between Malom and Leirangthel.

The youth further threatened Nabakishore to leave his bike, informed a local source.

However, Nabakishore managed to escape and drove for about 500 meter and informed some locals.

Soon the locals rushed towards the youth seeing which, he fled from the scene, however, on seeing the commotion, some local womenfolk who were returning after making offerings for ‘Saroi Khangba’ also joined the locals.

The youth in trying to flee from the scene, shot some rounds from his small arm and ran towards Komlaching.

He moved into the home of Chorita Tangkhul, 50 son of Leisifa where only a 12 year old boy was present.

He threatened the boy at gun-point not to inform anybody about his presence and to keep the door locked.

Chorita Tangkhul was posted at Ukhrul as a teacher and was not present at the time of the incident.

Further according to the source, the locals informed the Yairipok police.

On receiving the information, a team of the Yairipok cdo, Nongpok Sekmai cdo and 2nd Assam Rifles arrived at the spot.

The team cordoned off the surrounding areas and asked the youth to surrender at the earliest.

After the youth failed to surrender even after repeated appeals, the security team attacked the house.

The youth was found dead in the middle room of the house, later.

A forensic expert team from Imphal inspected the area and later along with the police team deposited the body at the JNIMS morgue.

Meanwhile, Thoubal SP K Radhesyam led team including additional SP (ops) Thoubal Dr S Ibomcha and Yairipok OC K Dhananjoy arrived at the scene to take stock of the scene.

The police recovered a 9mm pistol, two live bullets and a magazine and a mobile handset from near the dead body.
