MASTEC organises Mathematics Day

IMPHAL, March 26: The Manipur Science and Technology Council (MASTEC), organised a five-day national mathematics day in connection with National Mathematics Day on December 22 at Manipur Science Aquarium, DM College on Wednesday.

During the day, different competitions such as mathematics quiz completion for class IX to X, mathematics model competition for class VIII to XII, mathematics competition for class VI to VIII, VII to IX will be conducted. Other activities during the observation of National Mathematics Day will be organised such as mathematics puzzle, science film show, lecture cum demonstration, hands on activity.

Speaking at the function, MASTEC Director Th Surendranath Singh said that the Prime Minister of India Dr Manmohan Singh while inaugurating the Ramanujan Centre for Higher Mathematics at the Alagappa University, Tamil Nadu on December 26, 2011 has declared December 22 as the Nation Mathematics Day.

He added that the year 2012 was also declared as National Mathematics Year and the country celebrated the National Mathematics Year in different parts of India.

The first celebration of the National Mathematics Year was held on February 26, 2012 at the Madras University Centenary Auditorium to mark 125th birth anniversary of Srinivasa Ramanujan.

MASTEC is an autonomous organisation of the Department of Science and Technology. It has a mandate for promoting science and bringing appropriate technologies to the state for socio- economic development. Since last year, MASTEC has been organising a five-day state level programme under the banner of celebration of National Mathematics Day in the state, he said.

The Nation Mathematics Day couldn’t be organised on December 22 due to school exams in the state. Moreover, the target participants for this programme are particularly school students.

He elaborated that to mark the birthday of Ramanujan many seminars/workshop will be organised on December 22 in colleges and the  university from next year onwards followed by other activities in a five-day programme as continuing programme in April ever year for the school students.
