MDU opens five day long drama festival

IMPHAL, March 21: Manipur Dramatic Union, one of the leading theaters in the state which has been around for the last 70 years, can also be called an institution of drama.  With its own tradition, the theatre gives the meaning of drama to the people.

This was stated by the founder director of Kalakshetra, Padmashri Heisnam Kanhailal on the opening ceremony of the five-day-long festival of traditional plays of Manipur Dramatic Union on March 21 at the auditorium of MDU. It was jointly organised by North East Zone Cultural Centre, Dimapur, Department of Art and Culture, Government of Manipur and Manipur Dramatic Union.

He further added that MDU inspired the younger generations and educated about the formalities of drama and ideas from generation to generation.

“Senior artists work hard while producing a play but new generation artists are more dependent on technology.”

He proposed the need of documentation of the journey made by MDU that could help in research by future generations and emphasised on the importance of preserving our folktales.

Souvenirs were also released during the function. Saratchandra Chattopadhay’s play “Ramer Sumati” was enacted at the event.
