Mob attacks student accused of assaulting teacher

IMPHAL March 28: Leimapokpam Jhalajit of Maibam leikai Liwa lambi accused of trying to strangle his teacher at the Industrial Training Institute Takyel on March 24 was attacked by a mob this noon while being escorted into the court of the Judicial Magistrate First Class, Imphal.

People from the locality of the teacher who was assualted and other teachers of the ITI had laid in wait at the court complex. As police were escorting the IInd year student into the courtroom, the angry mob pelted stones. Police had to resort to lathi charge to disperse the protestors.

However, the confrontation did not end there, as the protestors continued to wait for the accused to be brought out.

As police tried to whisked Jhalajit after the court appearance in the official vehicle of the Lamphel OC, the protestors who were still laying in wait outside the court complex pelted stones at the vehicle.

Leimapokpam Jhalajithas been charged of attempting to strangle a teacher under Section 506, 325 and 354 Indian Panel Code. Protestors also shouted slogans demanding befitting punishment.

Meanwhile, the accused has been remanded to judicial custody till April 12.

A teacher of the ITI was also arrested for attacking at the Police OC`s vehicle.
