IMPHAL, March 7(NNN): A male teacher`s `advice` to his female students through mobile phone SMS has triggered protest rally in Manipur University today which subsequently prompted the Vice Chancellor of the varsity to take decision for the termination of the said teacher.

Around 1 pm today, girl students of Manipur University with support from the Manipur University Students Union Revival Demand Committee took out a protest rally inside the varsity campus demanding the termination of Dr Yengkhom Shantikumar, (35) of the Department of Physical Education and Sports Science, Manipur University.

According to the protestors, Dr Yengkhom Shantikumar, a resident of Kakching Mayai Leikai, Thoubal district used to send SMS to some of his female students advising them to study hard.

This became a routine affairs for some months.

Of late, Dr Shantikumar started sending obscene messages to the girl students. The students did not disclose about this to each other thinking she must be the only student receiving such messages and had not enough courage to strike the alarm bell. But as gossip-shop started widening these girls realised what Dr Shantikumar was upto.

A source said things have gone more than the sending of just obscene SMS. However, it was not ascertained.

After the rally, the protesting girls met the Vice Chancellor. The VC assured the students that an order to suspend Dr Shantikumar would be issued by 3 pm today and the termination order on Monday. It was not confirmed whether the suspension was already issued from the Vice Chancellor`s office.
